No one sets money aside for a dead USB stick — the thing cost less than a sandwich. Then one fails with the only copy of a contract, a dissertation or a season’s site photos on it, and suddenly the cheapest object you own is holding your most valuable files to ransom. More ‘dead’ sticks than you’d think are perfectly healthy sticks in unlucky circumstances, so rule those out first — it’s free and takes two minutes. Move it to a different port (front-panel desktop sockets and unpowered hubs are the usual troublemakers), then to a different computer entirely. On Windows, look in Disk Management to see whether the stick is sitting there without a drive letter — right-click, assign one, and it ‘comes back’. On a Mac, check Disk Utility for a greyed-out volume waiting to mount. That little elimination round resolves more cases than any download, and risks nothing.
If the stick turns up but plays up — demanding a format, reading as RAW or 0 bytes, showing empty folders where files used to be — its index has failed while the files behind it mostly haven’t. The fix is to read straight past that index: point PhotoRec at the stick and let it carve documents, photos and video out of the flash into a folder on your computer. The recovered files will arrive stripped of their names — a sorting job, and a welcome one. The rule that makes it work is the same everywhere: write nothing to the stick. Don’t install tools onto it, don’t save the results onto it, and whatever you do, don’t accept that format prompt first — a format lays down pristine empty structures exactly where your files’ last traces are lying. Repair the stick after the rescue with a full format — or, given what corruption usually says about the flash inside, just replace it. No flicker of life in any port, a plug bent by a knock or snapped off altogether, a stick that warms up and does nothing else — that’s hardware, and software can’t address a device the computer can’t even enumerate. What decides the odds now is restraint: the memory chip usually survives connector trauma, but each hopeful re-insertion and bit of bending fatigues the cracked joints that still hold it together. The computer is offering to write a fresh, blank index in its place. Your files are sitting behind the unreadable one, which is precisely why you decline, carve them off first, and format afterwards.
Measurably so. Budget sticks use lower-grade flash and the barest controllers, and a slice of the very cheapest are outright fakes — a small chip reprogrammed to advertise a big capacity, corrupting everything written past its real limit. For anything you’d hate to lose, buy branded, and treat every stick as transport rather than storage: the only copy of a file should never live on one.
