A Few More Frames, and Where They Landed

Her enquiry reasoned carefully from a real principle and reached a conclusion that needs one adjustment. Travelling, her camera "reformatted the SD card — about 2,500 photos, some of which I have not backed up. I've continued shooting five or six photos, some of which I've deleted, and only then realised the old photos are gone. Is this still retrievable, since the data overwritten is substantially lower in memory than the formatted data?" Her instinct is sound: a handful of new frames cannot physically overwrite two and a half thousand. But the arithmetic she is doing measures the wrong thing. What matters is not how much was written but where it went — and after a format, new files land in the least helpful place possible.

The decode: why position beats quantity, and what to do while travelling

Why the format itself was survivable: an in-camera format is a quick format. It writes a fresh empty index and marks the whole data area as available; it does not erase the photographs. Every one of her 2,500 images remained physically written exactly where it was, unlisted rather than deleted. That is why this is recoverable at all, and why her reasoning starts from the right place.

Where her arithmetic goes wrong: she is comparing volumes — five or six photographs against two and a half thousand — and concluding that the overwriting is negligible. In terms of quantity that is entirely correct. But files are not scattered randomly: after a format, a camera sees a card that is completely empty and begins writing at the start of the free space, which is the beginning of the data area. That is exactly where the earliest photographs sit. So a handful of new frames does not remove a proportionate handful of old ones at random — it lands squarely on the oldest material, which on a card filled over a long trip is likely to be the earliest part of the journey.

Why deleting the new frames did not help: understandable and worth saying plainly. Deleting removes the listing and leaves the data where it is, so the new photographs are still physically occupying the space they were written to. Deletion undoes the index entry, not the write.

What the realistic expectation is: good, with a caveat about which images. The overwhelming majority of the 2,500 should be recoverable, because five or six frames occupy a tiny fraction of the card. The losses will be concentrated at the beginning, and the results are best reported by date range so she can see exactly which part of the trip was affected rather than receiving a count.

The urgent instruction, and it matters more because she is travelling: take the card out of the camera now and buy another one today. Every further frame lands in that same free space and removes more of the earliest photographs. A replacement card costs a few pounds anywhere in the world, and it is the single cheapest data-recovery decision available to her.

The other thing to do while abroad: nothing else. Do not run recovery software on a phone or a hotel computer, and do not let anyone helpfully try to repair the card. Keep it dry, flat and out of the camera until she is home.
