Nothing Is Broken — the Network Is

This enquiry described a problem with no failure in it. "I need to move the content of my network drive to an external hard drive. I can't access the content currently because I don't have a wired connection at my location, and would need a solution to move the data to an accessible hard drive." No fault, no noise, no error — a working appliance and a person who cannot reach it. It is in this archive because it arrives regularly and because the honest answer is worth putting in writing: this probably is not a data recovery job, and there are two ways to solve it that cost very little.

The decode: two routes, both cheaper than a recovery

Route one — connect directly, no network required. A network appliance does not need a router or an internet connection to be reachable. A single ethernet cable run straight from the unit to a computer creates a network of two, and most machines will then negotiate an address automatically. Where they do not, setting a fixed address on the computer in the same range as the appliance takes a minute. That gives full access to the unit's own interface and shares, and the contents can then be copied to an external drive in the ordinary way. The whole solution costs the price of a cable, and it is the first thing worth trying.

Why this is not widely known: because network storage is sold and set up as part of a home network, and the mental model that forms is that the router is required. It is not — the router provides addresses and routing, and two devices joined by a cable can do without both.

Route two — read the disks directly. Where the appliance itself cannot be brought up, or where its own software has become the obstacle, the disks inside are ordinary drives carrying a Linux filesystem. They can be removed and read directly, and the contents copied off without the appliance being involved at all. That is bench work rather than a home job, but it is straightforward and it is what happens when a unit is genuinely dead.

The trap that catches people taking route two themselves: connect a NAS disk to a Windows machine and it will show as unformatted and offer to initialise it, because Windows cannot read the filesystem. Accepting that destroys the partition structures on a perfectly healthy disk. On a multi-disk unit there is a further hazard: the disks form an array, and initialising one member or allowing anything to rebuild the set can be far worse than a single disk's worth of damage.

What to establish before removing anything: whether the unit holds one disk or several, and if several, in what configuration — because a striped set needs every member and the disks must be kept labelled by bay. Photographing the bays before removal costs nothing and saves guessing later.

The honest commercial point: where a cable solves it, that is the answer and it should be said. Where the disks need reading directly, that is a service worth paying for — but the two should not be confused, and nobody should pay recovery prices for a connectivity problem.

On the bench

The direct connection route was established first, since a working appliance reachable over a single cable does not need a recovery service and saying so is the honest answer. Where the appliance could not be brought up, the disks were removed with their bay positions recorded, read directly write-blocked, and their Linux filesystem interpreted natively rather than through any host that would have offered to initialise them. The contents were delivered on directly-attached media the owner could use without a network.

The direct-connection route identified first, the disks read directly where needed and the contents delivered on attached media.
