His enquiry supplied a timeline precise enough to diagnose from. A 500GB external drive: "when I plug it in I get 'D:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect.' The drive was working fine this morning. It had a — relatively gentle! — bump around lunchtime, so my best guess is that it's got some kind of physical damage." Fifteen years of digital photographs are on it, and he adds that this drive was supposed to be the backup. His guess is right, and the exclamation mark is the part worth answering. Gentle is enough, and the reason is the single most useful thing an owner of a portable drive can know.

The decode: why gentle is enough, and what the message means
The distance that matters is measured in nanometres. A running hard drive has its read heads flying above the platter surfaces at a height smaller than a smoke particle, while the discs turn at thousands of revolutions per minute. Nothing else in ordinary consumer hardware operates at those tolerances. So the force required to bring a head into contact with a surface is very small — a knock against a desk edge, a bag set down firmly, a drive nudged while connected. That is why the archive keeps asking whether a drive was powered when it was moved, and why the answer matters more than the height or the surface.
What a drive that is switched off can survive: a great deal more. Parked heads sit retracted on a ramp at the edge, clear of the data surfaces entirely, and drives routinely survive falls in that state that would be catastrophic while running. His drive was connected and in use, which places it in the serious category despite the knock being minor.
What his error message adds: that particular wording is a device-level complaint rather than a filesystem one. It means an operation against the drive failed — a request was made and not serviced correctly — which is consistent with a drive that can no longer read reliably. It is a different and worse message than being told the disk needs formatting, which at least means the drive completed its start-up and only the filing structures could not be read.
