Formatting an SSD Is Not Like Formatting a Disk
His enquiry contained a reasonable argument that unfortunately does not hold, and he deserves to know why rather than to keep buying software. A 1TB portable SSD: "Formatted by accident and accidentally lost all my data. Did install third party recovery tools including two well-known ones and could not retrieve any data. The SSD has not been overwritten by any other data." That last sentence is true, and it is the basis on which almost everyone expects recovery to work. On a hard drive it would be decisive. On a solid-state drive it is beside the point — because nothing needed to overwrite anything. The drive erased the data itself, on instruction, within minutes.

The decode: why hard drives and solid-state drives differ completely here
What a format does on a hard drive: a quick format writes a fresh empty index and marks the space as available. The data itself stays physically written on the platters, untouched, until something else is placed on top of it. That is why "nothing has been overwritten" is such a powerful statement there — it means everything is still present and recovery is largely a matter of rebuilding the index or carving by signature. This is the model everyone has in their head, and it is correct for mechanical drives.
Why a solid-state drive behaves in the opposite way: flash memory cannot be rewritten in place — a block must be erased before it can accept new data, and erasing is slow. So operating systems tell the drive which blocks are no longer in use, and the drive erases them in the background, in advance, so that future writes are fast. That instruction is issued in bulk when a volume is formatted: the format tells the drive that the entire volume is free. The controller then works through it and clears the blocks — physically, on its own initiative, usually within minutes and without any new data being written at all.
So his statement is true and irrelevant: nothing overwrote the data, and nothing needed to. The drive was told the space was free and it did what it is designed to do. That is also precisely why the recovery applications found nothing: they scan for content that is physically present, and there was none to find. Running a third or a fourth would return the same result for the same reason.
Why this is worth saying plainly rather than offering to look: there is no equipment that reverses a completed block erasure, because the charge that represented the data is gone from the cells. A firm offering to assess a formatted-and-cleared SSD is selling hope. The honest answer costs him nothing and saves him from spending more.
The narrow exceptions worth checking: two. If the drive was formatted in a way that did not issue the bulk discard — some quick formats through certain tools or older systems do not — remnants may survive, and that is worth establishing. And if the drive was disconnected very quickly after the format, the controller may not have completed the erasure, though on a modern drive that window is minutes rather than hours.
Where the data may genuinely still be: not on the drive. Any earlier copy, any backup, any cloud account, any machine the material was ever copied from or to. On a portable SSD used as working storage, the originals frequently still exist on the machine they came from.
