Forty Seconds Is a Window, and the Fridge Is a Mistake

His enquiry describes a sequence that shows real problem-solving and one action that has to be addressed before anything else. A laptop that fell on the floor: "worked for a couple of times and then stopped altogether. I think it heats up very quickly and stops, as I put it in the fridge and after 5 minutes it started, but worked for 40 seconds only." His reasoning about heat is correct and his experiment proved it. But the fridge is genuinely dangerous to the machine, and there is a better answer than a forty-second window — because he does not need this laptop to run at all.

The decode: the fridge, the forty seconds, and the better route

Why the fridge must not be repeated, and this is first because it is urgent: cooling anything below the temperature of the surrounding air makes water condense on it — on the case, on the board, and inside the machine, in the same way a cold glass beads on a warm day. Bringing a chilled laptop into a warm room and then powering it means applying voltage to a board with moisture forming across it, which is exactly the condition that causes shorts and corrosion. It also does not fix anything: cooling slows a failing component enough to work briefly, and the fault is entirely unchanged. This applies to hard drives, phones and laptops alike — the freezer trick circulates widely and is one of the most reliably damaging pieces of advice in circulation.

Why it runs for forty seconds and then stops: his diagnosis is right. After an impact, a damaged component — commonly something in the power-regulation circuitry, or a cracked solder joint that has become a high-resistance connection — dissipates far more energy as heat than it should. It reaches a threshold within seconds, and the machine's own protection shuts it down before damage spreads. Starting from cold buys a longer run because there is further to go before the threshold; that is all the fridge achieved.

The reframe that solves it, and it is the whole point of this case: he has been treating a forty-second window as the resource to be spent. It is not. The storage does not need the laptop to work. On the great majority of machines of this type, the drive is a small module held by a single screw, and it lifts out and reads on an inexpensive adapter connected to any other computer. Once it is out, the thermal fault is irrelevant — no window, no rush, no risk of the machine dying partway through a copy. Stop trying to boot it and take the drive out instead.
