A laptop upgraded with a solid-state drive some time ago: "the drive appears to have lost its directory, as the machine can no longer run off it. This could be fixed with a simple format however… annoyingly I haven't backed things up in a while as I got complacent with it being solid state." He has identified his own reasoning and it is extremely common. Solid-state drives are more reliable and less predictable, and the second half of that sentence is the part nobody hears until afterwards.

What is true about solid-state reliability: he is not wrong to think they are better. No spinning platters, no flying heads, no bearings and no motor means immunity to the whole category of mechanical failure that dominates this archive — no drops, no head crashes, no seized spindles, no clicking. On that measure they genuinely are more robust.
What is not true, and this is the part that matters: that reliability translates into warning. A failing mechanical drive announces itself for days or weeks — it gets slow, it clicks, files take longer to open, the machine hesitates. Those symptoms are irritating and they are a gift, because they prompt people to copy things off. Solid-state drives usually give nothing. A controller failure takes a drive from entirely healthy to entirely inaccessible between one boot and the next, with no preceding sign at all. The failure rate is lower and the failure is more abrupt, which means the safety margin people rely on without realising — noticing something is wrong in time — is exactly what disappears.
The second thing that changes: where mechanical drives fail gradually and partially, so that most of the surface still reads even in a bad case, solid-state failures are more often all-or-nothing at the controller. There is less middle ground to recover from.
Why the format he mentioned would be especially damaging: he already knows not to accept it, and the reason is worth stating. On a spinning disk a quick format writes a new index and leaves the data physically present, so a great deal is usually recoverable afterwards. On a solid-state drive it also issues discard commands across the volume, and the controller then erases those blocks itself, in the background, within minutes and unattended. There is no undelete afterwards, because the memory really has been cleared.
Why his actual fault is the good kind: a lost directory means the structures describing where files live are damaged while the files themselves are untouched. Filesystems keep backup copies of their key structures at known positions, so rebuilding from one frequently returns everything with folders and names intact.
The point worth carrying: backups protect against events, not against device types. A drive with no moving parts still gets stolen, dropped in a bag, encrypted by ransomware, overwritten by mistake and formatted by a well-meaning prompt.
