Two Different Questions About the Same Drive
His enquiry reports a verdict and reads it as worse than it is. An old laptop run for a year on mains power after its battery died: "one day it won't go past the loading bar after login. Checked the disk utility in recovery mode and it seems the drive is non-bootable. Haven't done anything further. Main thing to recover is my photo library." And "non-bootable" is not the word he fears it is — it describes whether the machine can start from the drive, which is a different question from whether the data can be read.

The decode: what non-bootable measures, and what it does not
What the disk utility is actually checking: whether the volume contains a valid, complete startup system that the machine can hand control to — the operating system files, the boot loader, and the records pointing at them, all present and consistent. If any of that is missing or damaged, the volume is not bootable. That is a statement about starting a computer.
What it says about the data: nothing. A volume can be entirely readable and not bootable — documents, photographs and everything else intact, with only the startup components damaged. The two conditions are independent, and the word "non-bootable" is routinely read as a verdict on the whole drive when it is a verdict on one function of it.
Why his symptom fits that reading: the machine gets past login and then halts at the loading stage. That means it started, read the drive, authenticated him, and failed later — during the handover to the full system. A drive that could not be read would not get that far. Everything before the halt is evidence the storage works.
What most likely caused it: a damaged system file, an interrupted update, or a filesystem inconsistency — none of which touch user data. On a machine of that age with a failed battery, an abrupt power loss during a write is also a strong candidate, since a laptop running on mains alone has no reserve and switches off instantly if power is interrupted.
Why this is straightforward for the generation: a laptop of that era carries a standard removable drive.
