What Greyed Out Actually Tells You

Her enquiry uses one word that does a great deal of diagnostic work. A 2TB external drive: "when plugging it into my Mac the drive is recognised, but greyed out and I cannot mount it. The disk is spinning — I can hear it — and the white light is flashing. I used a recovery tool, but it cannot retrieve files." Greyed out is not a vague description of something not working. It is the disk utility saying, precisely, that the device is there and the volume is not usable — which separates the hardware from the filesystem in a single glance, and places this in the more recoverable category.

The decode: the three things her observation establishes

What being listed at all proves: the disk utility shows devices before it shows volumes. For an entry to appear, the drive has spun up, become ready, identified itself and reported its geometry — the whole hardware chain, including the enclosure, the cable and the drive's own start-up. A failed drive that cannot present itself does not appear at all.

What greyed out means specifically: the device is present and the volume beneath it cannot be mounted. The utility displays what it can see and marks as unavailable what it cannot use. So the entry is the hardware speaking and the grey is the filesystem failing — two statements in one line, which is why it is such a useful thing to report.

What the spinning and the flashing light add: confirmation from a different direction. Power is reaching the drive, the mechanism is turning, and activity is occurring — the drive is being asked for things and is responding to some degree.

Taken together: functional hardware, unreadable filing structures. That is the recoverable combination, and it is a materially better position than a drive that does not appear at all. The files sit where they were written; what is damaged is the catalogue describing where.

Why her recovery tool found nothing: worth explaining, because it is discouraging and misleading. Many consumer applications work through the operating system and need a mountable volume to scan. Where nothing mounts, they have nothing to work with and report accordingly. The ones that read a device directly are a different class of tool, and the failure of the first kind says nothing about whether the data survives.

The two things not to do, and both are offered prominently: the disk utility's repair function writes its conclusions back, and a conclusion drawn from damaged structures can overwrite the records a rebuild would use — a repair that fails is far better than one that succeeds. And the erase button sits next to it, worded as the way to make the disk usable again.

Why the outlook is good: filesystems keep backup copies of their key structures at known positions, so rebuilding from an image frequently returns everything with folders and original names intact.
