A Card That Crashes the Camera

The decode: what a black screen means, and what to protect

Why an unreadable card and a crashing card are different: when a camera meets a card it cannot interpret, it says so — card error, unsupported format, please format. That is the camera reading something and disagreeing with it. When the screen goes black instead, the camera has stopped functioning: it has queried the card, received no valid response or an electrically abnormal one, and hung or shut down protectively. The card is not merely failing; it is affecting the device it is inserted into.

What causes that: most often a controller that has failed in a way which leaves it holding the bus — not responding, and not releasing, so the camera waits indefinitely for a reply that never comes. Sometimes it is electrical: a card drawing abnormal current, which a well-designed camera detects and responds to by cutting power to the slot, taking the display with it.

Why that matters more than the footage right now: a cinema camera is worth many times the card, and a card presenting an electrical fault should not be repeatedly inserted into one. Most cameras protect themselves adequately and no harm is done — but "most" is not a basis for repeated testing on expensive equipment. The card should not go back in the camera.

What to do before trusting the camera again: test it with a different, inexpensive card. If that works normally, the camera is fine and the fault is entirely the original card. If the camera misbehaves with a known-good card too, the slot itself needs attention — and putting a replacement card in would risk that one as well. This costs almost nothing and settles a question that would otherwise sit unresolved through a shoot.

Why the footage is probably recoverable: the failure is in the controller rather than the memory. Cards keep the two separate — the controller conducts the introduction and manages the memory, the memory packages hold the data — and controllers fail far more often. The route is to read the memory directly past the controller and reconstruct in software: descrambled, error-corrected and rebuilt through the translation layer until the filesystem stands up.

What failing during recording adds: the clip that was being written when it stopped will have no index, since containers are only completed when recording ends. That clip is rebuilt separately from its stream data, and a short reference recording from the same camera at the same settings makes that considerably cleaner.
