The decode: why keeping it was right, and the two questions now

Why the machine being kept is the whole reason this is worth asking: the overwhelming majority of laptops in this situation are sold, recycled, donated or stripped for parts within a year. A machine that has sat untouched in a cupboard is a machine whose drive is in the state it was in when the shop returned it — not improved, but not degraded by continued use either. Nothing has been written to it for years, and on a drive where data was lost, that is the single most valuable property it can have.

Recovery applications must save what they find somewhere, and if the destination chosen was the same drive — which is the default on some tools and the obvious choice for anyone without a spare — then the recovery has been writing over the very space it was recovering from. The second question: whether the software completed a full scan, and how long the drive stayed powered doing it. On a drive with physical read problems, a full-surface scan is hours of sustained reading of exactly the failing regions — which is a real cost, though a bounded one.

Why neither answer is a reason not to proceed: she should not read any of this as having ruined it. Both are things nearly everybody does, both are recoverable from in most cases, and knowing which happened changes the approach rather than the answer. Saying so was useful, not incriminating.

What the years in storage have added: a spinning drive left unused for that long has its own risks — thickened lubricant, heads that may have adhered to a surface. So the drive is inspected rather than powered and tested, which is the right handling for any long-dormant media.
