"The Drive Is Working — It Just Needs Reformatting"
Her enquiry relayed a verdict containing a contradiction that is worth unpicking before anybody acts on it. A 2TB WD Passport for Mac that "would no longer show up when I plugged it into my laptop, so I took it to a local tech company. They advised me that the hard drive was working — it needed reformatting though — but that the files, although present, were corrupted. Are you able to recover corrupted files?" Three claims were made and they do not sit comfortably together. Most importantly, one of them is a recommendation that would destroy the recovery, and it was offered as the fix.

The decode: the tension, and the two different faults hiding in it
Why "working but needs reformatting" pulls against itself: a drive that genuinely works — spins, identifies, reports its capacity, returns data on request — does not need reformatting. Reformatting is what you do when the filesystem is unreadable, which is a different statement from the hardware being sound. Both can be true at once, and probably are: the mechanism and electronics are fine, and the structures describing how the space is organised cannot be read. That is a perfectly coherent position, and it is very good news — because it is the most recoverable category there is. But it should be described as an unreadable filesystem rather than as a drive that needs formatting, because the second phrasing turns a diagnosis into an instruction.
Why that instruction is the dangerous part: reformatting writes a fresh, empty filing structure over exactly the region a reconstruction rebuilds from. Her files would generally still be physically present afterwards, but they would come back stripped of folders, filenames and dates — and only if nothing were written to the drive subsequently. On a drive whose only fault is an unreadable structure, accepting that advice converts a clean recovery into a carve. It is offered constantly and in good faith, because in ordinary IT work reformatting is the fix; when the data matters, it is the opposite.
What "files present but corrupted" might actually mean, and it is worth establishing: two very different things. It may mean a scan produced a listing of files whose content could not be read — in which case the fault is at the level of reading data and the outlook depends on the surface. Or it may mean recovery software returned files that would not open, which frequently happens because a scan pads or truncates what it cannot read and writes out something of plausible size that is structurally broken. The second is an artefact of the tool rather than a statement about her photographs. Distinguishing them is the first job.
Her actual question, answered: yes, but with the distinction that matters. Files whose listing is damaged are routinely recovered intact by rebuilding the structures. Files whose content genuinely cannot be read need patient re-reading under timeout control, which recovers a great deal that a hurried scan cannot — and where sectors are genuinely unrecoverable, the loss is named per file rather than guessed at.
What she should not do meanwhile: not reformat, not run further scans, and not connect it repeatedly. Two assessments have already established that it does not present normally, and that is all a host can tell her.
On the bench
No reformat was performed and none was advised. The drive was imaged write-blocked before any repair, so that every subsequent step happened against a copy. On the image the structures and the content were examined separately — because "present but corrupted" spans an unreadable filesystem and unreadable data, which need different work and carry different odds. Filesystem reconstruction was attempted thoroughly before any carving, so that folders, filenames and dates returned rather than an unnamed heap, and the files were verified by opening rather than by counting.

Told your drive works but needs reformatting
Don't reformat it. Those two statements describe different things and both are probably true: the hardware is fine, and the filing structures that describe how your data is organised can't be read. That's genuinely good news, because it's the most recoverable situation there is — your files are sitting physically intact behind a damaged index. But reformatting writes a fresh empty structure over exactly that index, so following the advice turns a recovery that returns your folders, filenames and dates into one that returns unnamed files. It's suggested in good faith, because in ordinary IT work reformatting is the fix. Be careful with "files present but corrupted" too: that sometimes means the content can't be read, and sometimes just means recovery software padded what it couldn't read and produced files that won't open.
