A Healthy Drive the New Machine Cannot Read

His enquiry describes a problem that is not a fault at all. Having moved from a Mac to a PC: "my old harddrive isn't picked up on the new PC. It comes up under Disk Management, but I cannot assign a letter to the drive or view any of the files on it." That is precisely what a healthy Mac-formatted drive does when connected to Windows. The drive is fine, the data is fine, and nothing has failed — but the situation is genuinely dangerous, because the system will shortly offer him something that sounds helpful and would destroy everything.

The decode: why it appears but cannot be opened

What the disk management console is showing him: exactly what it should. The console lists devices and their partition layout. His drive is there, its size is right, and its partitions are visible — which proves the drive spun up, identified itself, reported its geometry and returned the structures at the start of the disk. Every hardware layer is working.

Why no drive letter can be assigned: letters are assigned to volumes the system can mount. Windows does not natively understand the filesystem a Mac writes, so it can see that a partition exists and cannot interpret what is inside it. With nothing mountable, there is nothing to give a letter to. The option is greyed out or fails because the request does not make sense, not because anything is damaged.

The genuinely dangerous part, and it is why this case is worth writing. When Windows meets a disk whose contents it cannot parse, it offers to initialise it — and on a newly connected disk that prompt sometimes appears automatically, worded as the step required to make the drive usable. Accepting writes a fresh partition structure over the start of the disk, discarding the description of everything on it. One click, no warning that matters, and a perfectly healthy drive full of files becomes a recovery job. He must not accept it, and neither should anyone whose drive appears without a letter.

What actually gets his files, and it is easy: read the drive on something that understands the filesystem. The simplest route is a Mac — any Mac, borrowed for an hour — from which the contents copy to a cross-platform drive. Alternatively, third-party software for Windows adds read support for Mac filesystems and will mount it directly. Either way the correct move is to copy the data off first and only then reformat the empty drive for use with the new machine, if he wants it as a PC drive.

Why the order matters so much: the natural instinct is to make the drive work with the new computer and then worry about the files. Reversed, that is exactly the sequence that loses everything — and it is one of the commonest ways people destroy intact data while trying to be organised.

The one caveat worth checking: if the drive was encrypted on the Mac, reading it elsewhere needs the password, and that should be established before anything is moved.
