A Burst Trackpad Is a Battery

The decode: the battery first, then the two machines

What a burst trackpad means: the battery cells sit directly beneath it. As a lithium cell ages and degrades — particularly one that has been through overheating — it can generate gas internally and swell, and because the case is rigid the only place the expansion can go is upward, lifting the trackpad and eventually the keyboard. That is not cosmetic damage; it is a chemically unstable cell in a sealed enclosure.

What to do with it, and this comes before any question about data: do not charge it or connect it to power. Do not press the trackpad back down, and above all do not puncture, bend or pry the cell — a punctured lithium cell can ignite.
