Formatted for One System, Unreadable on Another
His enquiry describes a drive doing exactly what it should, at the worst possible moment. Backing up camera cards on location: "I used a hard drive to back up an SD card while on set. I had to format it first to use it on the laptop, which was somebody else's. Upon arriving at home, it has requested that I format it again. These are important files from a music video shoot." Nothing is wrong with that drive. But accepting the prompt in front of him would destroy a day's shoot, and everything about the way it is worded invites him to.

The decode: why the prompt appeared, and what it is really saying
What happened on location: he formatted the drive so it would work with a borrowed machine, which was almost certainly of a different platform to his own. That format gave the drive a filesystem native to that machine, and the offload wrote his footage onto it successfully. Everything about that step worked.
What happened at home: he connected the drive to his own system, which does not natively read that filesystem. It can see the drive and the partition — the hardware is fine and the layout is valid — but it cannot interpret the contents, so it offers the only remedy it has: writing a filesystem it does understand. The prompt is not reporting a fault. It is reporting an incompatibility, in language identical to what a genuinely damaged volume produces, which is why this is one of the most dangerous prompts in computing.
What accepting it would cost: a music video shoot. And it is worth being clear that people accept it constantly, because the message says the disk must be formatted before it can be used, which reads like a setup requirement rather than an erasure.
What to do instead, and it is simple: read the drive on a machine of the same platform as the one that formatted it — the same borrowed laptop, or any equivalent — and copy the footage off onto media formatted for cross-platform use. Alternatively, software exists for most systems that adds read support for the other platform's filesystem, which mounts the drive directly. Either way the sequence is copy first, reformat afterwards if wanted.
The on-set lesson, which is the more valuable part. Working media should be formatted to a filesystem both platforms read before a shoot starts, not reformatted in the field to suit whatever machine is available. Formatting a drive on location to make it work with a borrowed laptop is a decision made under time pressure that determines what can be read afterwards, and it is exactly how footage ends up trapped on media the owner cannot open.
The deeper point, said once: this drive was the only copy of a shoot. An offload to a single destination is not a backup, and the established practice is copying to two destinations with checksum verification before any camera card is cleared.
