Erased Before Sale, and Still Entirely There
His enquiry was disarmingly brief. "Accidentally wiped data on an SD card in a drone as I was preparing it for sale. It's videos and photos." The good news arrives immediately: wiping a card in a device almost never erases anything, so his footage is very likely still sitting on it. But this case has a second half that is worth as much as the first, and almost nobody thinks about it until later. If a wipe does not erase your data before you sell something, it does not erase it for the buyer either — and the same fact that saves him here is a real exposure for anyone selling a device.

The decode: why it survives, and the other lesson in it
What a device wipe actually does: writes a fresh empty index and marks the space as available for reuse. It does not go over the card writing zeros — that would take a long time, wear the memory, and serve no purpose from the manufacturer's point of view, since the objective is to make the card usable again rather than to destroy anything. So every frame he recorded is physically present, unlisted rather than deleted.
What decides how much comes back: only what has been written since. Nothing has, because he wiped it and stopped. That is the ideal position — the entire contents intact, waiting, with no new footage laid over the top. The single instruction is not to put the card back in the drone, because a device with a card in it will happily start writing.
Why drone footage carves particularly well: the files are large, written in long continuous passes by a device that does not fragment, and carry distinctive container headers. So even with the index gone, clips are identified by their own structure and rebuilt whole. Flights also embed telemetry and timestamps, which means recovered footage can be put back in chronological order without its original filenames.
Now the part that matters beyond this case. He was wiping the card because he is selling the drone, and the wipe felt like the responsible step. It is not sufficient. Anyone buying that aircraft with that card could recover exactly what is about to be recovered here — flight footage, locations, anything else stored on it. The same is true of phones, cameras, laptops and external drives sold on every day. A quick wipe makes a device look empty and leaves the contents readable.
What actually clears a device before sale: for a memory card, a full format that writes over the whole capacity rather than a quick one — or simply keeping the card and selling the device without it, which is cheaper, faster and completely certain. For a phone or a modern laptop, a factory reset on an encrypted device is genuinely sufficient, because it discards the key rather than the data. For an ordinary external hard drive, neither a quick format nor deleting files is enough.

The card was imaged write-blocked behind the DeepSpar USB Stabilizer 10Gb, and the index state assessed before carving — establishing whether the wipe had replaced the index only, which determines whether files return with names and dates or as rebuilt streams. Format-aware carving then ran for video and photographic containers, rebuilding clips from their own headers. Media was validated by playback and rendering, and returned in chronological order using embedded timestamps.
The outcome
