Three Buttons and Which One to Press
Her enquiry quoted the dialogue exactly, which makes this one of the most directly answerable cases in the archive. Transferring video from a 64GB SD card to an external drive: "it got a quarter of the way through the transfer before saying 'Mac is unable to read the device. Initialise, Ignore, Eject.' I have hit Eject and removed the SD card." That box appears constantly and almost nobody knows what the three options actually do. She pressed the right one — and the reasoning is worth setting out, because the wrong choice is one click away and the box gives no clue which is which.

The decode: the three buttons, then what a quarter means
Initialise — the destructive one, and the one that sounds most like a fix. It means format: write a fresh empty filing structure over the card. Everything that describes where her video lives would be replaced, and the recovery would drop from a clean rebuild with filenames and folders to a carve producing unnamed clips. It appears first in the list and it is worded as the action that makes the device usable, which is exactly backwards.
Ignore — the deceptively harmless one. It dismisses the message and leaves the card connected and mounted in its unreadable state. The card stays powered, the system continues to poll it, and background processes may continue trying to index or write to it. On a card that has just failed mid-operation, that is more attempts against something already struggling. It looks like the neutral option and is not.
Eject — the correct one, and what she chose. It stops the system talking to the card and releases it cleanly so it can be removed. Nothing is written, nothing further is attempted, and the card's state is frozen where it is. On any device holding data that matters, this is the answer every time that dialogue appears.
What "a quarter of the way through" is worth: a real head start, and the first thing to check. If the transfer had already written a quarter of the files to the external drive before it failed, those may be complete and usable — so the destination should be examined and the arrived files spot-checked by opening them before any recovery is commissioned. It may reduce what is actually needed by a quarter.
Why the card failed partway: the transfer was reading continuously from it for a sustained period, which is the load that exposes marginal media. Either a region became unreadable and the system gave up on the device, or the filing structures were damaged and it could no longer make sense of the volume. Neither erases anything.
What not to do now: not reinsert it to try again, and not put it back in the camera, which will eventually offer to format it in its own words.
