Absent From Disk Utility in Recovery Mode

Her enquiry described a clean sequence and, without realising it, ran a properly controlled test. "My MacBook Pro froze last night and since then I haven't been able to boot up normally. When I open in recovery mode and open Disk Utility, my internal hard drive does not show up — only the base system. I hadn't backed up any of my files, so I'm worried they are lost." That observation is worth more than it appears. Recovery mode runs from somewhere else entirely, so the internal drive being absent there is not a filesystem problem or a software problem — it is a much more fundamental absence, and knowing that changes what happens next.

The decode: why the test she ran is a good one

What recovery mode is: a small, separate operating system stored in its own place, which is why it starts when the main system will not. When she boots into it, the machine is running from that — not from her drive. So everything working in front of her is independent of the storage she is worried about.

Why the absence is significant: the disk utility lists devices before it lists volumes. A drive with a damaged filesystem still appears there, greyed out or unmountable, because the hardware is present and identifying itself even though its contents cannot be read. Her drive is not appearing at all — which means it is not presenting itself as a device. That rules out the entire filesystem-damage category and places the fault below it, at the drive or its connection. It is a narrower finding than "my Mac won't boot", and she arrived at it by accident.

Why the freeze fits: a machine that locks up and then cannot find its drive has usually experienced a storage failure in progress — the freeze being the system waiting indefinitely on a device that stopped responding. That sequence is common and consistent with what she describes.

What the route depends on: the machine's generation, and this is the question that decides everything. Older models carry removable storage — a module or drive that lifts out and reads on separate equipment, independently of a machine that will not boot. Newer ones have storage soldered to the logic board and encrypted to a security chip, where there is nothing to remove and the board is the only route. The serial number on the underside identifies which, and it should be supplied with any enquiry.

What she must not do: reinstall. The recovery environment she is already sitting in offers exactly that, and the reinstall route offers to erase the drive as part of it. Since her drive is not currently visible, an erase would most likely fail — but if the drive returns intermittently, as failing drives do, an attempt could catch it at the wrong moment. Nothing should be reinstalled, erased or repaired.

The reassuring part: a drive that has stopped presenting itself has not erased anything. Her files are where they were; what has failed is the drive's ability to announce itself, and that is a hardware question rather than a data one.

On the bench

The machine generation and storage configuration were established first, since a removable module makes the state of the machine irrelevant while soldered storage makes the board the only route — and the two carry entirely different work. Where storage was removable it was read on generation-matched equipment, taking the non-booting machine out of the question.
