When Two Things Fail in the Same Phone

Her enquiry mentioned the second failure almost as an aside, and it is the most important detail in the message. A microSD card with photographs that "has just stopped working in my phone," with no liquid damage and no obvious cause — and then, in a postscript about how to contact her: "my SIM also stopped working." Two entirely separate components, with nothing in common except the handset they were both sitting in, failing at about the same time. That is not a coincidence worth ignoring, and it changes both the diagnosis and, urgently, what she should do next.

The decode: what two failures together mean, and the urgent consequence

Why one failure tells you little and two tell you a lot: a memory card failing on its own is ordinary — cards fail. A SIM failing on its own is ordinary too, though less common. Both failing in the same handset, at around the same time, with no liquid or impact to explain either, is a different proposition. Those two components share almost nothing: different technologies, different manufacturers, different purposes. What they do share is a slot, a tray and a circuit board. When unrelated things fail together, the sensible place to look is what they had in common.

What can do this: several things, all in the phone. A combined tray that holds both card and SIM can be bent or damaged, deforming contacts on both. The slot's contacts can corrode or wear so that neither device connects reliably. And more seriously, a fault on the phone's board — in the power regulation feeding those slots — can deliver the wrong voltage to whatever is inserted, which damages devices rather than merely failing to read them. That last possibility is the one that matters most.

The urgent consequence, and it is the reason this page exists: she should not put a new card or a new SIM into that phone. If the handset is damaging what is inserted, a replacement will go the same way — and people do exactly this, repeatedly, concluding that they have been sold faulty cards. Anyone in this position should assume the phone is the suspect until it has been checked, and use a different handset in the meantime.

What it means for her photographs, which is mostly good: a card damaged by a slot fault has usually suffered at the contacts or the controller rather than at the memory. The photographs sit in the NAND behind that, and where the card no longer enumerates at all, the memory is read directly at chip level — bypassing the damage entirely. So the outlook is reasonable even though two things failed.

The one test worth doing: try the card in a different device — a computer with a reader, or another phone. If it works elsewhere, the card is fine and the handset is confirmed as the fault. If it fails everywhere, the card has been damaged and the handset is still the likely cause.

On the bench

The card was tested independently of the originating handset, since a phone capable of damaging one insert is capable of damaging another and the card should not go back into it under any circumstances. Where the card enumerated it was imaged write-blocked; where it did not, the memory was read at chip level past the controller and reconstructed in software, bypassing any contact or controller damage the slot had caused. Every photograph was validated by rendering before delivery.

The outcome

The card assessed away from the suspect handset and the photographs recovered and validated.
