The Prompt You Were Right to Refuse

His enquiry described the situation and then, without knowing it, gave the correct answer to it. An external drive that "doesn't show on my computer when it is connected but appears as 'unknown' and 'not initialised' on the disk manager. The system asks me to initialise it to access it, but I'm afraid to lose my data if I do so." That fear is not excessive caution — it is precisely right, and it has probably saved his files. Initialising is presented as the step required to access the disk, and it is the step that would destroy what he is trying to reach. The wording is the problem, and it catches people every day.

The decode: what the words mean, and why the offer is a trap

What "unknown and not initialised" actually reports: better news than it sounds. For the disk to be listed at all, it received power, spun up, identified itself and reported its capacity — which eliminates the seized, clicking, dead-board and unidentifiable categories in one observation. What Windows then does is look at the very start of the disk for the small structure describing how the space is divided into partitions. When it cannot read or make sense of that structure, it has no vocabulary for "damaged" — it concludes the disk has never been set up, and describes it as uninitialised. The disk is not blank. Windows simply cannot see the map, and assumes there was never one.

Why the offer that follows is so dangerous: having concluded the disk is new, Windows offers the only sensible thing to do with a new disk — write a fresh partition structure to it. The prompt is worded as the step required to access the drive, which is the opposite of what it does: it writes a new, empty map over exactly the region a reconstruction reads to rebuild the old one. His files would generally still be physically present afterwards, but the structures naming them and locating them would be gone, so recovery would drop from a clean rebuild with folders and filenames to a carve producing unnamed files.

Why his instinct deserves stating plainly: because the interface gives no clue. Nothing on that screen says "this will make your data harder to recover". A person is told the disk needs initialising to be accessed, wants to access it, and clicks. Resisting that — with no technical knowledge, purely on the suspicion that a step called initialise sounds too much like starting over — is the correct judgement, and it is the difference between the two outcomes.

Why the outlook is good: partition structures are small and filesystems keep backup copies of their key records at known positions inside the volume. So the original partition entry can frequently be located and rebuilt exactly, returning the volume with its folder tree, filenames and dates intact.

What else to refuse: the other items in that same right-click menu — New Simple Volume, Format, Delete Volume — all write to the disk. And repair utilities work above the layer that has failed here, so they have nothing to fix and can make things worse.

On the bench

No initialisation was performed and nothing was written to the drive. It was imaged write-blocked before any repair, so that every subsequent step happened against a copy and no prompt could reach the original. On the image the partition structures were located — including the backup copies filesystems maintain at known offsets for exactly this event — and the entry reconstructed until the volume mounted from the copy with its folder tree, filenames and dates intact. Contents were verified by opening.
