The Model Matters More Than the Year

Her enquiry was clear-eyed about the cause and modest about the ask. "My water bottle leaked on my 2017 MacBook, which now doesn't turn on. I know it's water damaged — I just want to know if any of the files on it can be saved." That is a well-scoped question and it has a well-scoped answer, but it depends on something she has not said. 2017 is the year the range was split: some machines sold that year hold their storage on a module that lifts out, and others have it soldered to the board and sealed to a security chip. The same spill on two machines from the same year produces two completely different jobs.

The decode: the two machines behind one year, and the clock that is running

Why 2017 is the awkward year: machines from that period fall either side of a design change. The older-style bodies still carried a removable storage module — a proprietary blade that lifts out with one screw and reads on a generation-matched interface, entirely independently of the machine it came from. Newer bodies moved to storage soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys held in a dedicated security chip, which means there is no drive to remove and no route that avoids the board.

Why the difference is enormous for her: on a removable-module machine, a dead computer is close to irrelevant. The module comes out, reads on a bench, and the water damage to the rest of the laptop does not matter. On a soldered machine, the board is the route — it has to be cleaned and repaired far enough to run and unlock its own storage, and if corrosion has reached the storage packages or the security chip, that is the honest end. Same spill, same year, two entirely different prospects.

How to establish which: the serial number identifies the exact model, and it is printed on the underside of the machine. That single number answers the question before anything is opened, and it is worth supplying with the first enquiry.

The part that matters regardless of model — and it is urgent. Liquid causes two problems on different clocks. The electrical damage happened at the moment of the spill and is already done. Corrosion is the second and it is only beginning: the residue left behind is chemically active and attacks traces, pads and component legs progressively over days and weeks. A machine cleaned quickly loses very little; the same machine cleaned in two months may have lost the traces that would have made it repairable. So on either kind of machine, the answer to "should I wait and think about it" is no.

The four things not to do, on either model: do not try to power it on or plug it in to charge, because current through conductive residue is how a survivable spill becomes a dead machine. Do not dry it in rice or with heat, which removes water and leaves the residue exactly where it is. Do not tip or shake it, which spreads liquid further. And on a soldered machine, do not allow a logic board replacement before the data is off, because that discards the security chip holding the keys and with it the data, permanently.

On the bench

The model and storage configuration were identified before any route was proposed, since a removable module makes the state of the machine largely irrelevant while soldered storage makes the board the only route — and the two carry entirely different work and prospects. Where the module was removable it was extracted and read on a generation-matched interface, taking the damaged machine out of the question. Where storage was integrated, the board was cleaned of residue rather than dried, with corrosion mapped, and repaired at micro level to the point where the machine would run and unlock against her own credential.

The outcome

The configuration established first, the route chosen accordingly and the data recovered without any board replacement. Either way, move quickly: the electrical damage is done but corrosion runs for weeks, so a machine cleaned in days loses far less than one cleaned in months.
