Stuck on "Preparing Automatic Repair"
Her enquiry described a screen millions of people have watched and almost nobody understands. A laptop that "would not load properly. Upon switching on, the screen was black with the maker's logo and beneath it a white dot continuously hovering above 'Preparing Automatic Repair'. This lasted for hours with no further change." A local engineer tried and could not retrieve the data without specialist equipment. Two things are worth knowing about that screen, and the second one is why this page exists. It is not a loading message. Automatic Repair is a process that writes to your disk — and a machine left on it for hours is not waiting patiently, it is trying, repeatedly, on a drive that evidently cannot cooperate.

The decode: what that screen is doing, and why hours is the warning
What triggers it: Windows notices that the previous start-up failed, and rather than trying again it launches a recovery process to diagnose and fix the problem. That is a sensible design and it resolves plenty of ordinary faults. But it is not a diagnostic that merely looks — it is a repair, and repairs write. It checks and rebuilds boot configuration data, examines and corrects the filesystem, and can roll back recent changes. All of those modify the disk.
Why it is stuck: the process needs to read extensively from the drive to do any of that. On a drive with failing reads, each attempt hits sectors that do not return, the drive retries internally for seconds at a time, and the process makes no progress. That is precisely what "hours with no further change" describes. So the screen is not a sign that the repair is thorough; it is a sign that the drive cannot be read — which is a hardware finding, arrived at before anyone opened anything.
Why leaving it is harmful: for as long as the machine is on that screen, a failing drive is being asked continuously for exactly the regions it cannot deliver, with the heads reseeking across weak areas and the drive running warm. And if the repair process does eventually gain enough traction to act, it will write its corrections to a filesystem it has only partially been able to read — which can leave the structures in a worse state than it found them. The instinct is to let it finish because interrupting feels risky. On a drive holding the only copy of something, the opposite is true.
The other thing on that screen worth knowing about: when Automatic Repair gives up, it offers recovery options — and among them, prominently, is Reset this PC. That erases. People reach it after hours of frustration, at exactly the point where they most want the machine working again, and it is the single most destructive button in the sequence.
What the engineer's answer actually meant: he could not read a drive that will not return data using ordinary tools, which is an honest description of a real limit rather than a lack of effort. Reading a failing drive requires equipment that can control timeouts and defer bad sectors, which is not something a general IT toolkit includes.
