An Open Drive Spinning in Room Air

His enquiry is calm and describes the most damaging thing anybody in this archive has done to a drive. It would not boot, so "I took the front off and ran it up in the dock, and the arm is happily jumping up and down. There is a slight scratch on the disc but physically that's all I can see." He is doing this to investigate, which is entirely understandable. But the scratch he can see is very probably being made by what he is doing, and it grows with every rotation. This one needs saying before anything else: stop, and do not power it again.

The decode: why open operation destroys, and what the scratch is

The scale involved, because it is not intuitive: a drive's heads fly above the platter at a height smaller than a particle of smoke. The sealed assembly exists because the air inside must be free of anything larger than that. Ordinary room air is full of dust, skin cells, fibres and pollen — every one of them enormous by that standard. A drive spinning with the cover off is drawing that air across the platters at speed, and anything that lands is struck by a head travelling at operating velocity.

What that does, mechanically: a head striking a particle gouges the magnetic coating. The gouged material becomes more debris, which circulates and causes more strikes. It is a compounding process — each rotation makes the next one worse — which is why the damage from open operation escalates rather than staying constant.

So what the scratch means: the magnetic coating in that band has been removed. That is permanent — there is no recovering data from a region where the recording layer no longer exists, by any technique at any price. It is one of the few genuinely irreversible outcomes in this work. And the band widens with continued rotation.

What "the arm is happily jumping up and down" actually is: not a good sign. The head assembly is seeking — moving to find its reference position, failing, retreating and trying again. On a drive with surface damage, each of those sweeps carries the heads back across the affected area. So the movement he is watching is the mechanism repeatedly crossing the damage while adding to it.

What can still be done, honestly: the platters have regions inside the damaged band and regions outside it. Data in the affected area is gone. Data elsewhere may be readable, depending on how far the contamination has spread and whether the heads are still capable — which requires inspection under filtered air, replacement heads, and imaging scoped to avoid re-crossing the damaged region. That is a real prospect and it depends entirely on the drive not being spun again.

What to do right now: close the assembly to keep further dust out, leave it closed, do not power it, and tell whoever handles it next exactly what was done. A drive known to have been run open is approached completely differently from one that has not — and nobody will be surprised or judgmental. It is the single most useful thing he can say.

On the bench

The drive was not powered again, since operation in unfiltered air is a compounding process where each rotation drives fresh contamination onto the surfaces and widens existing damage. The assembly was closed and handled as contaminated throughout.
