The decode: what initialising does, and what its failure tells us
What initialising actually is: writing a fresh partition table to a disk so the system can create volumes on it. It is the operation offered when the console meets a disk whose layout it cannot interpret, and it is worded as the step required to make the disk usable. On a disk containing data, it is destructive — it replaces the structure describing everything on the drive with an empty one, which is precisely what a recovery works from.
