The Update Was Probably Not the Cause

Her enquiry did the right diagnostic before asking, and the result changes the whole direction. "All of a sudden, seemingly after an operating system update, my system doesn't see my internal data drive at all. It's a 2TB drive where I keep my data, not the system. From what I can gather, the BIOS doesn't recognise the disk either." That last sentence is the answer. The firmware runs before any operating system exists — it has no drivers, no updates and no knowledge of what is installed. A drive missing there is missing for reasons that have nothing to do with the update she is blaming.

The decode: what the firmware test proves, and why the timing misleads

Why checking the firmware was the right move: the firmware inventory is produced before any operating system loads, by the machine asking its storage bus what is physically attached. It knows nothing about Windows, drivers, updates or filesystems. So a drive that appears there has been detected at the hardware level, and a drive that does not has failed to identify itself electrically. That single check separates every software explanation from every hardware one, and she performed it unprompted.

Why that matters practically: because the alternative is days of wasted effort. Somebody who believes an update removed their drive will roll it back, reinstall drivers, edit settings and search for compatibility problems — none of which can affect something the firmware cannot see. Establishing this first saves all of it.

Why the timing is nevertheless not a coincidence, exactly: the interesting part. An update forces a full shutdown and restart, often several. And drives are stressed most at power-on — the moment the motor must start a stationary platter stack, the electronics face inrush current, and the drive must complete its readiness sequence from cold. A drive that has been running continuously can be quietly failing for months without anything revealing it, because nothing ever asks it to start again. So the update did not cause the failure; it revealed one that was waiting. The same thing happens after power cuts and holidays.

What to check, all free: the power cable, the data cable, a different connector on the board, and a different power lead from the supply. Loose or failing cabling produces exactly this, and a data drive that is not routinely disturbed can have been marginal for a long time. These take ten minutes and resolve a meaningful share of cases.

What remains if those are good: the drive is failing to complete its own start-up — most often because it cannot read its service area, the reserved region holding its firmware and configuration that it must read before presenting itself. That sits below the filesystem and above the mechanism, and it leaves the data untouched.

Why the working system drive helps: it shares the same supply, controller and machine, and it works — which eliminates the computer and narrows things to that drive or its own connections.

On the bench

Cabling and the power path were eliminated first on a different port and connector, since a drive absent from firmware detection is very often absent for reasons costing nothing to fix, and the working system drive had already eliminated the machine. The drive was then assessed on a native connection outside the machine and its readiness sequence read directly, establishing precisely where start-up stopped. Access ran through the PC-3000 Express in technological modes with the service area assessed and repaired until the drive completed initialisation.
