A Light That Never Settles

His enquiry noticed something most people would describe as simply "the light is on," and the detail he added is the useful one. An external drive where "when I connect the drive via USB to the computer, the light flashes continuously and the drive does not show up on the computer. I ordered a new cab"le. Ordering a cable was a sensible first move. But a light that flashes without stopping is reporting activity that never completes — which is a different symptom from a light that stays solid or does not come on at all, and it says something fairly specific about where the fault sits.

The decode: what the three light states mean

Why the cable was worth ordering: it is cheap, it is the commonest single cause of connection problems, and the connectors on portable drives wear. Eliminating it first is the correct order and should be done before anything else. It is also worth trying a different port directly on the computer rather than a hub, since power delivery varies.

What a light that does not come on at all means: no power reaching the device — a cable, port or supply problem, or a failed enclosure board. Nothing is happening.

What a solid, steady light means: power present and the device idle. It has started, it is not doing anything, and it is waiting.

What his continuous flashing means, and why it is the informative one: activity indicators flash when the drive is being accessed. Continuous flashing with no disk appearing means access is being attempted repeatedly and never completing. The enclosure is powering the drive and asking it to become ready; the drive is trying; the attempt fails; and the cycle repeats. So the enclosure and its power supply are working — which is genuinely useful information, because it eliminates the cheap end — and the drive is failing to reach the state where it can present itself.

What that usually is: most commonly the drive cannot read its own service area, the reserved region holding its firmware and configuration that it must read on every start-up before reporting anything. Sometimes it is mechanical — a drive that spins but cannot position its heads well enough to complete initialisation, which frequently comes with a faint repeated sound worth listening for.

Why leaving it connected is the thing to stop: the flashing is a loop. Every cycle is another initialisation attempt on a drive that cannot complete one, and if the difficulty is mechanical, each attempt has a physical cost. It will not resolve by being left plugged in for longer, and the position is already established.

Listening, which costs nothing: in a quiet room, a faint repeated click, a beep, or a strained tone in time with the flashing changes the picture from electronic to mechanical, and it is worth reporting either way.
