The Enclosure Survived and the Drive Did Not
Her enquiry separates two things that share a plastic case. A 5TB externally powered drive: "unfortunately I dropped it off the TV unit and now the light does not power on. The fan comes on as usual, two bleeps then" nothing further. The fan running and the drive light staying dark is not a mixed signal — it tells you the enclosure is alive and the drive behind it is not, which eliminates the cheap explanations in one observation and points the assessment squarely at the mechanism.

The decode: what each half is telling you
What the fan running establishes: the mains adapter is delivering power, the enclosure's own circuitry is working, and the unit is doing what it does on start-up. That eliminates the failed power supply and the dead enclosure board — the two cheapest and commonest causes of a desktop drive showing no life at all, and the ones always worth ruling out first. Here they are ruled out for free, by a fan.
Why the drive light staying dark matters: the activity indicator reports the drive being accessed. Power reaching the enclosure and the drive never lighting means the drive is not getting far enough to be talked to — it is not becoming ready, so nothing is accessing it, so nothing lights.
What two tones mean, and why the count is worth reporting: a drive has no speaker. Audible tones are the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn — each attempt producing a sound as the motor pulls and fails. Two of them followed by silence indicates the drive tried twice and then stopped, rather than continuing indefinitely. That is the firmware reaching a conclusion and shutting down, which means the electronics are running well enough to make a decision even though the mechanism will not move.
What the drop did: two candidates, and both are mechanical. Heads that were over the platters at the moment of impact may now be resting on a surface and adhered to it, so the motor cannot break them free. Or the spindle bearing has been damaged and no longer turns freely. The drop is the cause either way, and both require the drive to be opened under filtered air.
Why the height matters less than the state: a drive that was switched off has its heads parked away from the surfaces and survives a great deal. A drive that was running has them flying microscopically above spinning platters, and a fall of any distance can bring them into contact. Desktop drives are usually left powered, which is why shelf height is enough.
What must not happen now: no further power-up. If the heads are stuck to a platter, each attempt is the motor pulling at full torque to drag them across the magnetic surface. Two tones per attempt is fewer sweeps than a continuously straining drive, but it still accumulates, and the position is already established.
On the bench
The drive was not powered again, since each attempt drags potentially adhered heads across the surfaces. The enclosure supply and electronics were confirmed functional separately — the fan operating on power already indicating that the two cheapest causes were eliminated, which is worth establishing formally before mechanical work is quoted. The drive was opened under the laminar flow bench and the head assembly, platter surfaces and spindle inspected before any spin attempt, matched donor parts fitted as indicated, and imaging performed in one supervised session.
The outcome
The enclosure eliminated first, the mechanism inspected before power and imaged in one supervised session. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT, 50% of parts and labour upfront with the balance only on successful recovery. The decode, for anyone whose external drive runs its fan and shows no drive light: that split is useful. The fan proves the adapter and the enclosure board work, which rules out the two cheapest causes for nothing. And audible tones are the motor straining against platters that will not turn — a fixed number followed by silence means the firmware tried, concluded and stopped, so the electronics are working while the mechanism is not.
