A Recording of the Sound Is Worth Sending
His enquiry offered something almost nobody thinks to offer. An old 3.5-inch desktop drive: "I was looking at repairing it as my first option if possible, or data recovery as my second option. The hard drive does power up and makes a sound as though it wants to start up, but not going beyond this. I have made a video which I can send if this helps." Yes — send it. A recording of the sound is one of the most useful things an owner can supply, and it is free. But the framing of his two options needs turning around first, because repair and recovery are not first and second choices on the same ladder. They are different goals, and pursuing the first can eliminate the second.

The decode: what a recording tells us, and why the order of his options matters
Why the sound is genuinely diagnostic: a drive has no speaker, so every noise it makes is a mechanical event, and the different events sound different. A beep or rising tone is the spindle motor straining against a stack that will not turn — heads adhered to a platter or a stiffened bearing. A click can only happen once the platters are turning, and means the head assembly is failing to position itself. A grind or scrape suggests contact with a surface. A brief whirr that stops is a spin-up attempt abandoning. Those point at different components, different work and different urgency — and a customer's description in words routinely conflates them, because most people have no reason to know that "it makes a noise" covers four distinct faults.
Why a recording beats a description: it removes the translation step. Somebody who has heard a few hundred of these can identify the event from the recording immediately, and often say before the drive arrives whether this is a bearing, an adhesion or a head-positioning fault — which means the right approach is planned rather than discovered. It also means the drive does not need to be powered again to reproduce the sound, and on a mechanical fault every power-up costs something. His instinct to film it is exactly right, and more people should.
Now the framing worth reversing. He proposes repair first and recovery second. On a drive holding data you want, that order is backwards, because the two goals pull in opposite directions. Recovery aims to extract the contents and treats the drive as expendable.
