It Was Recovered Once and Put Back to Work

Her enquiry arrives with another firm's assessment attached and a piece of history that explains a great deal. Having been told by a recovery company that they cannot retrieve her data, she writes: "then I remembered that you successfully managed to retrieve my data in 2021 from the same drive, and wondered if you think it possible to do it again considering the problem this time." The same drive, recovered once, failed again. Which raises something more useful than the technical question: a drive that has been through a recovery should not have gone back into service, and almost everybody assumes it can.

The decode: what a recovery does and does not do

The distinction at the centre of this: a recovery retrieves data from a device. It does not repair the device. Those are different objectives and the work reflects it — the aim is to get the contents out, once, in a controlled way, not to return a dependable drive to its owner. A drive that has been recovered has not been fixed, and whatever caused the original failure is generally still present.

Why that is so easy to miss: because after a successful recovery the drive frequently works. Addressing is restored, the volume mounts, files open, and it behaves normally — so returning it to service feels reasonable rather than reckless. Nothing about a working drive announces that it is a drive with a history. The correct disposal for recovered media is retirement, and it is worth saying explicitly because nobody says it at the time.

Why solid-state drives in particular: where a controller has once failed to complete its start-up and been brought back through its firmware area, the underlying condition — degraded management structures, exhausted spare capacity, a marginal controller — has not been reversed. It has been worked around. A drive in that state can run for months and then present the same fault again, which is consistent with what she describes.

Why the history is genuinely useful now: knowing that this drive was recovered before, and by what means, tells the bench where it was weak. A repeat presentation of a known fault is a different assessment from a first-time failure, and it is worth retrieving rather than starting from nothing.

On the other firm's assessment: it should be read rather than dismissed or repeated. A provider reporting no retrieval has attempted something, and what they attempted matters — particularly on solid-state media, where certain approaches foreclose others. Asking what was tried, and whether any write or firmware operation was performed, is the right first step and costs nothing.

The honest position: a second attempt is worth making where the first firm's approach differed or where the fault class is one this bench has addressed before on that model. It is not worth promising. That distinction is stated before any charge rather than after.

The practical advice for afterwards: whatever the outcome, the data should not go back onto that drive. And the general rule is worth carrying: if a drive has been recovered, it is now a drive you have already been warned about.
