The Key Was an Application, and It No Longer Installs
Her enquiry describes a decade-old drive and a modern computer that cannot meet it. A portable drive last used about ten years ago holding "all her baby photographs up until around age 2. I recently got a new laptop and attempted to access these again, however was unable to install any of the software onto the new laptop to allow me to open it." Whether this is trivial or serious turns on one question — what that software was actually doing — and there are two possibilities with very different answers.

The decode: the two things that software might have been
The first and commoner possibility — it was a convenience layer. Portable drives of that era shipped with manufacturer applications offering backup scheduling, a launcher, drive health readouts and similar. None of that is required to read the drive. The volume underneath is an ordinary filesystem, and plugging the drive into any modern computer should present it directly. If that is the case here, the answer is simply to ignore the software entirely and open the drive as storage — and the fact that the installer will not run is irrelevant.
The second, and the one that matters — it was the unlock. Many portable drives of that generation offered password protection, and where that was enabled the encryption is performed by the bridge board inside the enclosure rather than by the computer. The manufacturer's application is the thing that presents the password and tells the bridge to unlock. Without it, the drive appears as a small unreadable volume, or a locked device, or simply refuses to present anything.
Which one she has, and how to tell: connect the drive and see what appears. A volume with folders means it was a convenience layer. A tiny volume containing only an unlock application, or a device that appears without usable contents, means protection was enabled. That test takes a minute and decides everything.
Why the protected case is still workable: the encryption is in the enclosure, so the drive must be read through its own bridge with the password supplied — which means the enclosure board must be preserved and must not be discarded, and the password or its recovery mechanism becomes the object of the search. Shucking the drive out of a hardware-encrypted enclosure returns ciphertext, which is the mistake most likely to be made here and the one that cannot be undone.
Why the software will not install, incidentally: applications from that era were built against system components and installer frameworks that have since been retired, and many were never updated because the product line moved on. It is not a fault and it will not be fixed.
The urgent part, regardless of which case applies: the drive is ten years old and has been sitting unused. Lubricant thickens in storage and heads resting on a platter can adhere, so the mechanism has developed its own risks independent of the access question. Whatever route works, the contents should be copied off promptly and onto something current — not left on a ten-year-old drive for another decade.

Old drive whose software won't install on a new computer
Plug the drive in and see what appears before assuming you need that software. Most manufacturer applications of that era were convenience layers — backup scheduling, health readouts, a launcher — and none of it is needed to read the drive, so if a volume with your folders appears you can ignore the installer completely. The important exception is password protection: where that was switched on, the encryption is done by the board inside the enclosure and the application is what presents your password to it. In that case never take the drive out of its case, because a drive shucked from a hardware-encrypted enclosure reads as meaningless data. Either way, copy everything off promptly — a drive that's sat unused for ten years has developed its own problems.
