The Synology arrived with two disks producing bad sectors, causing the volume to collapse. All four members were individually imaged. Then the Btrfs metadata was rebuilt and the file tree was restored completely.
Following the drop, this is a classic example of a head-stack failure. A matching donor disk was obtained, and an in-house head-stack swap was performed. The drive was successfully imaged on the second pass.
Each of the five disks was separately imaged. Offline, the parity was reconstructed from the images. And then a virtual array was built using those images. The client’s entire NTFS volume, which had previously been lost, was restored along with every single client file. The entire job was also forensically logged.
All our drives are tested and restored in-house by our own engineers, with no subcontractors or third-party labs. Our company has been restoring lost data from failing drives, RAID arrays and corrupted memory cards since 2002, for over two decades. This experience allows us to determine quickly what can be saved.
