The Question Nobody Answers Clearly

This enquiry came from someone helping a colleague and it contains a question that deserves a direct reply. A 2TB external drive "not being acknowledged by his laptop unless plugged into a dock, at which point it would appear as uninitialized. Couldn't find a conclusive answer on if initializing would wipe the drive or not, so tried to use software that could access data on uninitialized disks. All it found was ~150,000 or so bad sectors before I stopped to prevent further damage." The answer is yes, it would — and not looking it up hastily was the right instinct, as was stopping when the numbers started climbing.

The decode: the direct answer, then what the number means

Yes — initialising writes to the disk, and it is destructive. It creates a fresh partition table at the very start of the drive, replacing whatever structure was there. That structure is the description of every partition and therefore of everything on it. The data area itself is not overwritten, so recovery afterwards is not impossible — but the map is gone, so files come back by carving without folders or original names rather than as a clean rebuild. The prompt is worded as the step required to make the disk usable, which reads like setup rather than erasure, and that wording is why the question is asked so often and answered so badly.

Why the drive appears uninitialized at all: not because it needs initialising. It means the system read the first sectors of the disk and could not find a partition structure it recognised — because the structure is damaged, or because those sectors are among the ones that cannot be read. Given 150,000 bad sectors, the second is very likely. The drive is not asking to be set up; it is failing to describe itself.

What 150,000 bad sectors means: a genuine and substantial physical read failure. Each is a region the drive attempted, exhausted its error correction on, and could not return. That is not a software finding or a false alarm — it is the drive reporting through the software, and at that volume it indicates surface or head degradation rather than a handful of marginal spots.

Why stopping was the right call: a scan reads the entire surface including every failing region, repeatedly. On a drive in that condition each pass means the heads crossing damaged areas again at full retry, generating heat, with marginal regions turning into unrecoverable ones. Stopping to prevent further damage is exactly correct, and it is unusual for anyone to do it while a progress bar is still running.

Why it works through a dock and not directly: a dock supplies its own power and uses a different bridge, so a drive marginal on current or timing can enumerate through one and not the other. It is a useful observation and it does not indicate a second fault.

What is done instead: error rates measured first to establish how the failures are distributed, then imaging with per-sector timeouts — each difficult sector given a strict budget and deferred rather than exhausting the drive's retries — with healthy regions captured at speed and weak ones revisited on later passes. Structures are rebuilt from the image, never from the drive.
