Whether the backup holds everything is answerable today, at no cost, and the answer determines whether the first question matters at all.

The decode: what the symbol means, and how to check a backup without the machine

What the crossed-circle symbol reports: that the machine looked for a system to start from and did not find one. That is all. It does not indicate a failed drive, a damaged disk or lost files — it is the firmware saying there is nothing bootable here. The cause may be a failed drive, a corrupted system, or a boot setting, and the symbol does not distinguish between them.

Why the second question is the one to answer first: if the backup drive holds all twenty thousand photographs, the internal drive becomes a repair question rather than a recovery one — and repairing or replacing a machine is a completely different decision made with far less pressure. If the backup is incomplete, the gap defines exactly what a recovery needs to target. Either way the answer changes what happens next, and it costs nothing.

How to check it without the machine working: connect the backup drive to any other computer. Its contents are readable independently of the machine that made them — a backup drive is storage, not a component of the desktop. If the backup was made with the system's own backup software, browsing it on a different machine of the same platform is straightforward; on a different platform the folder structure is usually still visible enough to count and spot-check even where the format is proprietary.
