Naming What You Need Changes the Work
Her enquiry asks for less than most, and that is worth more than she probably realises. A laptop that "stopped working a few months ago. I have since bought a new one, however I am currently writing my dissertation and I am in desperate need of a few documents that are on the broken laptop." Not everything. A few named documents, for a specific purpose, with a deadline attached. That is the most useful thing anybody can say when asking about a recovery — and for a machine of that generation the answer is more encouraging than she expects.

The decode: why the scope matters, and the free checks first
