A Drive That Has Been Worked On

This enquiry came from someone doing exactly the right thing with a bad situation. An old internal laptop drive, "in very poor condition. The user had a kid try to repair it, but it seems they just made it worse. It was given to me as I build PCs, but this is out of my depth." Two people have now handled it and the second one stopped. That matters, because a drive that has already been through an unskilled attempt is a different proposition from one that simply failed — and what happens next depends heavily on something that costs nothing: an honest account of what was actually done to it.

The decode: what "made it worse" usually means, and why saying so helps

The three interventions that account for most of it: and they differ enormously in consequence. The mildest is repeated power cycling — plugging it in over and over to see whether it catches. On a mechanical fault that spends the drive's remaining margin and can widen scored areas, but it leaves nothing to clean up. Next is swapping the circuit board from another drive of the same model, which is advice found everywhere online and fails on modern drives because each board carries adaptive data unique to its own mechanism; the drive then behaves worse than before, and the original board may have been discarded. The most serious is opening the sealed assembly outside filtered air, which admits airborne particles that score the platters the moment they spin — and which frequently comes with parts removed, screws lost, or the head assembly disturbed.

Why an honest account is worth more than an apology: the practical point. A drive that has been opened is assessed completely differently from one that has not — contamination is looked for before anything is powered, and it is never spun to "see what happens". A drive whose board was swapped needs its original board found, because the adaptive data on it may be the shortest route back. A drive that was merely power-cycled a hundred times needs neither. Nobody is going to be told off; the information simply changes what is done first, and getting it wrong wastes the drive's remaining margin on the wrong approach. If the original board, screws or removed parts still exist, send them.

Why the handoff itself is the right decision: worth saying plainly, because people who build computers are often expected to be able to fix anything with storage in it. Building a PC and recovering a failing drive share almost no equipment and no technique — one is assembly of working parts, the other is extracting data from something that has stopped working, under conditions that cannot be improvised. Recognising that boundary and stopping is a considerably better outcome for the data than a confident attempt, and it is the same judgement the archive praises in repair shops that refer onward.

What to do with it now: nothing further. Do not power it, do not open it further to look, and do not attempt to put anything back that was removed. It should be kept flat, still and dry, with any removed parts bagged alongside it.
