Honest About What He Did
His enquiry described something this archive warns against, and then described the one thing that made it survivable. A failed drive that "was opened by myself and the platter exposed for approximately 3–4 minutes in an attempt to check if the head was not parked, then closed back up. I then sent it by post to a data recovery service. They said the drive had been slightly contaminated from when I opened it, but managed to get this slight dust off" under filtered air. The decode: what four minutes does, and why disclosure changed it
What exposure actually risks: a drive's heads fly above the platters at a height smaller than a smoke particle. Ordinary room air carries dust, skin cells and fibres, all of them enormous by that standard. Anything that settles on a platter becomes an obstacle the moment the drive spins, and a head striking a particle at operating speed gouges the surface. The damage is not caused by the lid being off — it is caused by the drive being powered afterwards.
Why four minutes was survivable: the exposure was short, the drive was presumably reclosed in a still room, and — critically — it was not spun up afterwards. Contamination that settles and is then removed under filtered air, before any rotation, does no damage at all. Everything about that sequence went right after the initial error, and it is why the assessing firm found only slight dust rather than scored platters.
Why telling them was the decisive act: a drive that has been opened is assessed completely differently from one that has not. Knowing to look meant they inspected for contamination and cleaned it before spinning anything. Had he said nothing, the drive would have been treated as a sealed unit, powered as part of a normal assessment, and any settled particle would have been dragged across the surface in the first second.
