Damage That Waited

His enquiry connected two events that most people would treat as unrelated, and he was right to. A 1TB drive holding around 200GB of client video: "my drive failed whilst working on a project — started making a slight grinding sound and beeping. The drive had been dropped from a desk onto the floor a few days before this started to happen. Drive will not be recognised now and the noise continues, but I haven't used it since it started, to avoid destroying the data." The gap between the fall and the failure is the interesting part. The decode: why damage waits, and what the two sounds mean

Why a drive can be damaged and still work: an impact does not have to be immediately disabling. A head assembly can be knocked slightly out of true, a suspension can be bent without breaking, a bearing can be marked without seizing. In every one of those the drive still spins, still positions its heads well enough to read, and still presents itself normally — while operating with less margin than it had before. It is damaged and functioning, which are not mutually exclusive.

What then happens over days: the damage progresses under use. A slightly misaligned head reads with more errors and works harder to compensate. A marked bearing wears faster around the damage. A head flying lower than it should eventually makes contact, and contact generates debris that circulates inside the sealed enclosure and causes more. So the failure arrives days later and feels like a separate event, when it is the same event finishing.

Why the delay misleads so reliably: because "it worked fine afterwards" is treated as proof that the fall did no harm. It is proof of nothing except that the drive was not disabled outright. This is one of the more consistently misread patterns in the archive, and it matters because it changes what people report — somebody who thinks the drop is irrelevant does not mention it, and a drive assessed without that history may be tested rather than inspected first.

What his two sounds indicate together: a beep is the spindle motor straining against a stack that will not turn freely, and a grinding sound suggests physical contact somewhere in the mechanism.
