Getting Data Off a Machine From 1995

This is the oldest working computer in the archive and the enquiry is a pleasure. An early-nineties PC kept from student days, holding a final-year project and other files of sentimental value. "The drive is an internal SCSI 2.1GB drive, partitioned into four half-gigabyte drives. The machine powers up and boots into Windows 95 safe mode. I can see the data on the drive and I'm able to open it." That last sentence changes the category entirely. Nothing has failed — the machine works, the drive reads, the files open. This is not a recovery. It is a transfer problem, and the obstacle is simply that a machine from 1995 has no convenient way to talk to anything made since.

The decode: why the partitions look like that, and how to get the data out

Why a 2.1GB drive is split into four: a detail that dates the machine precisely. The filesystem of that era, FAT16, could not address a volume larger than 2GB — and in many configurations the practical limit was lower still. So a drive larger than that had to be divided into several volumes, each under the ceiling. His four half-gigabyte partitions are not a choice anyone made for organisational reasons; they are what the technology of the time required.

Why the machine still working is the best news possible: it means the drive spins, the heads position, the controller works and the data is readable. Everything this archive usually has to establish is already established. The only question is the route out.

The routes, in order of preference. Remove the drive and read it on a SCSI controller — the cleanest option by a distance, because it takes a full sector-level image of the whole drive at once, captures all four partitions together, and includes anything deleted that still survives. It needs the right controller, the correct cable, the drive's ID set properly and correct termination at the end of the bus, which is the detail that catches people. A period network card and a file transfer — workable, though modern systems have disabled the old file-sharing protocols, so a simple FTP server on the receiving machine is more reliable than trying to share folders. A null-modem serial cable — very slow but dependable, and fine for a project's worth of documents. Writing to CD, if the machine has a burner, which many of that era did not.

The urgent part, and it is genuinely urgent: a thirty-year-old drive that currently spins should be imaged now. Drives of that age have stiffened bearings and dried lubricant, and the fact that it started this time is not a promise about next time. Every boot to browse the files is a spin-up spent on looking rather than capturing. The correct order is to take a complete image first and explore it afterwards, at leisure, from a copy.

What not to do: not run disk repair utilities of the period, not defragment, and not attempt to copy files one at a time over many sessions — each session is another power cycle on an irreplaceable mechanism.

The drive was imaged on a period-appropriate SCSI controller rather than transferred through the machine, with the bus correctly terminated and the device ID set — since a full sector image captures all four partitions at once, includes anything deleted that survives, and spends the drive's remaining spin-ups on capture rather than browsing. The image was taken before any file copying, and the partitions were interpreted from the image afterwards rather than from the original. Contents were delivered on modern media in a form readable on a current machine.
