You Are Not Booting It, You Are Reading It

His enquiry contains a belief that is stopping him doing something easy. Two drives kept from work laptops that were long ago thrown away, retained in case there are family photographs on them: "one drive has a SATA connection, but my PC isn't compatible with Windows 7, which is what I believe is on the drive. The other drive has an interface which I think is PATA." What operating system is installed on a drive has nothing to do with whether you can read it — and once that is out of the way, one of these two drives is a job for a caddy and an afternoon.

The decode: the correction, then the one real obstacle

Why the operating system on a drive is irrelevant: because he is not asking his computer to run that system. Attaching a drive as secondary storage means the computer reads its filesystem and lists the files — and the filesystem used by that generation of Windows is read natively by every modern version, and by Macs with a small addition. The installed operating system is just a folder full of files, sitting there being ignored. Compatibility matters for booting. It does not matter for reading.

What that means practically for the serial-interface drive: an inexpensive caddy or adapter, plug it into any modern computer, and it should appear as a drive with folders on it. That is a fifteen-minute job requiring no expertise. If the photographs are there, this is over.

The one genuine obstacle, and it is the other drive: the legacy parallel interface is obsolete. No modern machine has that connector, and it is physically incompatible with anything current. That drive needs a specific adapter for that interface — they are cheap and still available — and it also needs its own power arrangement, since laptop drives of that era draw power through the same connector in a way modern adapters do not always provide. So the second drive is a small equipment problem rather than a data problem.

The thing worth checking before anything, given where these came from: they are ex-work machines. Corporate laptops are frequently encrypted, and if either drive was, it will not read as an ordinary volume no matter what it is connected to — the recovery key would be held by the former employer's systems, which effectively closes it. Establishing whether either machine ever asked for a startup password is worth doing first.

And a point worth making plainly: drives from work laptops may also hold company data. Anything of that kind is not his to read or retain, and the sensible course is to look for the personal material and leave the rest alone — which is also a reason to be specific about what is being sought rather than sweeping everything off.

On the age: both have sat unused for years. If either turns out to be readable, the contents should be copied off promptly rather than left where they are.
