Invisible to Everything, Including the Firmware

His enquiry lists his own eliminations, and they are the right three. A laptop solid-state drive "not detected by the firmware. Boots with the message no bootable device found. The laptop had been booting fine before this. I have tried bootable recovery media but this also failed to detect the drive. Have also tried reseating the drive — again no luck." Firmware, independent boot media, and physical reseating. Those three together eliminate the operating system, the software layer and the connection, which narrows this considerably — and unfortunately narrows it toward the harder of the two solid-state failures.

The decode: what each test ruled out, and what is left

What the firmware test established: the most important of the three. The firmware inventory is produced before any operating system loads, by the machine asking its storage bus what is physically attached. It has no drivers, no filesystem knowledge and no dependence on anything installed. A drive absent there has failed to identify itself electrically — which eliminates every software explanation in one step.

What the bootable media added: confirmation from an independent system. Recovery media brings its own operating system and its own drivers, so a drive invisible to that as well cannot be a driver problem or an installation problem on the original system.

What reseating added: elimination of the connection. Modules of this type are held by a single screw and seat into an edge connector, and a partially seated one is a real and common cause. Having reseated it, that is ruled out too.

What remains, and the honest position: the drive's controller is not completing its own initialisation. These devices run their own firmware on start-up, reading internal structures before they can announce themselves; where those structures are damaged, or where the controller has failed electrically, the device never reaches the point of presenting itself to the bus. Nothing above it can help, because there is nothing to talk to.

Why this is the harder solid-state failure: worth saying plainly rather than after an assessment. Where a controller can still be addressed in its manufacturer's technological and safe modes — a diagnostic path built in for exactly this — its firmware area can be assessed, damaged modules repaired and the translation layer rebuilt, after which the drive addresses its media normally. That route exists and is tried first. But where the controller cannot be addressed at all, the fallback is not what it would be on a memory card. On a solid-state drive the mapping between logical addresses and physical flash locations, and frequently the encryption applied to the data, live in the controller — so reading the memory packages directly returns material that cannot be reassembled without it.

Why the abruptness fits: he says it had been booting fine. That is characteristic rather than surprising — solid-state drives typically fail without the gradual warning a mechanical drive gives.

What not to do: not attempt a firmware update, and not accept any tool's offer to erase or reinitialise the drive.
