The Prompt That Has to Be Refused
His enquiry described a message that appears constantly and is misunderstood almost universally. A solid-state drive he can no longer reach: "when I try to access the data it says I have to reformat the drive. It worked earlier in the month but not now. The files are music, photos and documents — these are the important ones." That prompt looks like the system offering a repair. It is not. It is an offer to empty the drive, and on a solid-state drive specifically, accepting it does something far worse than it would on a spinning disk — it sets off an erasure the drive performs on itself, within minutes, that nobody can undo.

The decode: what the prompt means, and why an SSD makes it worse
What the system is actually saying: not that the drive needs repairing, and not that formatting will fix anything. The message means I cannot interpret the structures on this volume — shall I write fresh empty ones so it becomes usable? Usable, in that sentence, means empty. It is offered because the operating system's job is to give you working storage, not to preserve what it cannot read, and the wording gives no hint of the difference.
Why refusing matters far more on a solid-state drive: here is the part that catches people. On a spinning disk, a quick format writes a new index and leaves the data physically present, so a great deal is usually recoverable afterwards. On an SSD it does not stop there. The format issues discard commands across the volume, telling the drive which blocks are no longer needed — and the controller then erases those blocks itself, in the background, as part of its ordinary housekeeping. That happens within minutes and without anything being plugged in or attended. There is no undelete afterwards, because the memory has genuinely been cleared. On this class of drive, a format is close to a true erase.
Why it failed suddenly: "worked earlier in the month" is diagnostically useful. Gradual wear tends to produce slowness, errors and files that fail one at a time. An abrupt transition from fully working to entirely unreadable is more typical of a structural failure — either the filesystem records damaged by an interrupted write, or the drive's own translation layer, the internal map converting logical addresses to physical flash locations, becoming inconsistent. Both leave the data physically present and unreachable.
Which of those it is decides the route: a filesystem problem is rebuilt from an image, frequently returning folders and filenames intact. A translation-layer problem is addressed in the drive's vendor modes to restore addressing before anything can be read at all. The distinction is established by whether the drive reads sectors reliably when asked.
What to do now: disconnect it and leave it disconnected. Do not accept the prompt, do not run repair utilities — which write their conclusions back — and do not let any tool offer to make the drive usable again. Every one of those helps in the direction of an empty drive.
