Recovering the Audio Is Not Recovering the Sessions

His enquiry names the content type, and for once that changes the technical approach rather than just the sentiment. An external drive holding "years worth of recordings — project files, mixes and audio. When I plug it into any computer, and I have tried my own machine as well as various others, it still lights up, I feel it vibrating and hear it running. However it does not show up on any of the computers I have tried." The fault is familiar. What is not familiar is that recovering his audio files would not recover his work — because a project is a set of pointers, and pointers need the folders they point at.

The decode: the fault, and then why the content type matters

What powered-and-spinning-but-absent means: the mechanism is turning and the drive is not completing the introduction that would make it appear. Rotation eliminates a seized spindle and a dead supply; the absence places the failure at readiness — most often an inability to read the drive's own service area, sometimes heads that cannot position well enough to complete initialisation. Multiple hosts eliminate the computer.

Now the part specific to his files, and it is the reason to say what the work is. A music session file is not a container holding the audio. It is a description — a list of references to audio files stored elsewhere on the drive, together with timings, levels, plugin settings and arrangement. Open a session and the application goes to each referenced path and loads what it finds there.

What that means for a recovery: where a filesystem cannot be rebuilt, the fallback is carving — identifying files by their internal signatures and writing them out. That returns audio, and it returns it as thousands of files without names, without folders, and without the paths the sessions refer to. The sessions then open to nothing. Every reference points at a location that no longer exists, and reconnecting them by hand across years of projects is work measured in weeks. Technically the recovery succeeded; practically the work did not come back.

So what the deliverable has to be: the directory structure, preserved, with files in their original relative positions. That means reconstructing the filesystem rather than settling for carving — which is a different priority, and one worth stating up front because it changes how the job is approached and what a successful outcome looks like.

Why this applies well beyond music: video editing projects, design documents with linked assets, photograph catalogues, and anything using a database that references files by path all behave the same way. For project-based work, the folder tree is part of the data. Anybody in those fields should say so when asking for a recovery, because a firm optimising for the largest number of recovered files may deliver exactly the wrong thing.

The fallback if structure cannot be recovered: sessions can sometimes be relinked by matching audio by length and characteristics, and applications offer bulk relink functions. It is laborious and it is better than nothing, but it is the second answer rather than the first.
