Deterioration You Can Hear Over a Day

The decode: what changed, and why the change is the lesson
What yesterday's state meant: a drive that whirs while copying some files and failing others is a mechanism still working and struggling. The heads position well enough to read parts of the surface and not others, so the successful copies came from healthy regions and the failures from regions the heads could not read reliably. That is a drive with a real fault and remaining capability.
What today's state means: clicking is a distinct symptom from whirring, and the change matters. It is the head assembly attempting to position, failing to find its reference, retreating and trying again — the sound of a drive that can no longer establish where it is on the surface. Combined with no longer appearing at all, the mechanism has crossed from struggling to unable.
